Geberit and the shower toilet
The start of a love affair
Geberit AquaClean. The shower toilet. How it all began in 1978
In 1978, when Geberit launched the WC enhancement solution Geberella and the Geberit-O-Mat complete solution, the first Geberit WC with an integrated shower function – essentially a combination of a toilet and a bidet – the topic of personal hygiene was causing a real sensation all over the world. The Japanese, who are known for their high standards when it comes to cleanliness and personal hygiene, implemented what was then a novelty in their own domestic market at lightning speed. Just a few years later, the innovative toilets could be found in every second household there. In Europe, however, it would still be some time before the intelligent shower toilets found their way into bathrooms and WCs. Geberit continued developing its shower principle and introduced further models under the Balena brand, including the first wall-hung integrated shower toilet, which could be combined with a modern prewall installation and concealed cistern to create a completely new design.
In 2009, the product range was completely redesigned and relaunched under the name of Geberit AquaClean. These products not only meet higher quality standards, but also set a new benchmark in personal hygiene.
The product line has been continuously enhanced with design-oriented models since 2013, starting with the Geberit AquaClean Sela, created by the well-known architect and designer Matteo Thun. The Geberit AquaClean Sela fulfils the requirement for pure bathroom design and the desire for the distinctive fresh feeling of Geberit AquaClean. This is also reflected in the product's name: “Sela” is the name of the spring that forms the source of the River Inn in the Engadine region of the Swiss mountains.
Swiss mountain water has also been the inspiration for the names of other shower toilets in the AquaClean family: Mera and Tuma. Both shower toilets were created by prestigious industrial designer Christoph Behling. The Mera rises in the Upper Engadine and is the perfect name for a masterpiece in design and revolutionary comfort technology that embodies the freshness and cleaning power of water. Since being unveiled at the ISH trade fair in March 2015, the new Geberit AquaClean Mera top model has set the benchmark for cutting-edge WC design and technology in the shower toilet market. In 2017, Geberit is launching a compact all-round solution for every household with the AquaClean Tuma model. This shower toilet, which is available as a complete solution or a WC enhancement solution will transform even small bathrooms quickly and easily into an oasis of well-being.
